Tips for Drivers
Safety Tips
- Most accidents involving bicyclists and drivers occur at
intersections. Be sure to yield before pulling out from a stop or
yield sign.
- When turning right, slow and merge behind a bicyclist ahead
of you. Don’t turn across a bicyclist’s path. (MGL Ch.90 Sec.14)
- When turning left, yield to on-coming bicyclists, even
those at the far side of the road. (MGL Ch.90 Sec.14) Don’t
underestimate the speed of a bicyclist.
- Signal well in advance of turning so bicyclists know your
intentions. (MGL Ch.90 Sec.14B)
- When getting out of a car, check for approaching bicyclists
before opening the door.
- Exercise extra caution when passing joggers.
- Be Considerate. Bicyclists may need to use any part
of the road. On narrow roads you may have to slow and wait for a
favorable opportunity to pass. Inappropriate gestures, remarks or use
of your horn are impolite at best.
